From Chrysler Arena to courts around the world, they wore the maize and blue. And now they’re bringing you the game inside and out. Hail Media presents Nolan and Hobbs, the women’s hoop homecourt podcast, hosted by Maddie Nolan and Jordan Hobbs. Hello everybody and welcome back to the Nolan and Hobbs show. Unfortunately, my co-host Patty Nolan is not here. We’re live in Ann Arbor though at Knight’s Steakhouse.
Super excited edition of the podcast. Who am I here with? We’ll start with Ashley. So mechanic of Yeah. Well, do you want to talk tell about like your age, your major? I’m a senior on the Michigan women’s basketball team.
Political science major. Hi, my name is Macy Brown. I’m a senior and I’m studying sport management. Knights Steakhouse in Ann Arbor is one of our sponsors of the show. We just had their meal. Like what did you guys think?
And I know they’re sponsored, but like honestly it was really good. 10 out of 10. I love trying restaurants in Ann Arbor. This meal was really fire. Calamari. We got appetizers.
We got calamari. The sauce. So good. I got What did I get? Oh, I got a burger. Build your own burger.
Fire. So good. The Brussels sprouts were amazing. Yeah. I honestly would highly recommend.
Ash, what did you get? What did you think? Oh, I also got a burger. So good. Brussels sprouts 100 out of 10. Cannot like best ones I’ve ever had. And the waitress recommended them and they were so good.
We we cleaned the plate the clean it. It’s honestly just great fuel for this Morgan Wallen concert that we’re about to go to and standing up for hours. So, we’re really excited to have this sponsorship with them and can’t thank them enough for hosting our podcast this week. Thank you for joining us. These are our two current players that we have on the podcast. First, Ashley, let’s just get a little insight into how the summer has been so far.
You’ve been back for what, like five or six weeks? How have workouts been? What are you thinking about the team this year so far? Workouts have been great. We’ve been definitely getting our work in with team workouts, team practices, individuals, group workouts, and of course, Friday conditioning. But it’s been great.
I think our we have a great group of girls. Uh we have three newcomers that are here right now, so it’s been great getting to know everyone. Yeah. love Macy. As we have talked about in the podcast, unfortunately Torres Yellen has had surgery and is in rehab right now. Rehab like it’s it’s something bad.
Recovery. Yeah. Um how has that been going for you? Well, thanks for asking, Jay. It’s been going really well. Um it’s actually 3 months post-op today, so yep, it’s a little winds, but it’s been great.
We have a great training staff with Miss Chris, Jamie. Everyone’s been super helpful and coaches have been super supportive. I’ve been able to run underwater and like in Alter G which is super fun and I got to jump with some bands the other day. Yeah. So, it’s the little wins. But it’s been cool just seeing how much like your body can grow even like a week and how like every little win can kind of add up to something big.
So, yeah. Well, we’re super proud of you and cannot wait to see you back on the court, but we know you’re going to be a great teammate in the meantime. You always are. Um, Ashley, back to you. Ashley, is there anything specific that you’ve been working on this summer that you want to bring into next season in your own personal game? Shooting threes.
Okay, we going to see some this year. Hopefully like a couple. Nothing crazy. I’m not going to pull a silo swords, but Sil’s got the ultimate. Yeah, she’s the best I’ve ever seen, but hoping to get better. Me and Mel have been working on it.
Shout out Mel. Yeah, get that versatility in. Oh, yeah. Amen. All right, we got a little fun games sort of thing. I’ll ask you to blind rank these drills from Michigan women’s basketball practices.
I’ll explain the drills a little bit after I say them and then you guys can blind rank them. There’s 10. So, one through 10. All right. First one, and you you’ll get to think as I explain, is warm-up shooting. It’s a drill we do to warm up and it’s like five minutes of mid-range shots and then three minutes of threes.
So, what are your rankings? Are we doing one is the best or? Yeah. One is the best. One is the best. 10 is the worst.
I’ll go I’ll put it at Are these just like drills in general? Like warm-up drills or just all drills. I would say I’m going to do I’ll say three. I’ll agree. I’ll go three. I agree.
That’s a good ranking. You were about to say one. I know, but then I realized it was all the drills and I said, “Oh, three is good.” Okay, next drill is Pistons closeout, which is a drill three on three. And you kind of run out from the baseline to guard your man. Three on three.
I love Pistons. Personally, I’ll I’m going to give it four. I’ll say four. I’m going to agree. I love when we finally get enough stops that we get to go to offense.
Oh, yeah. Then we do three person offense gets really hype. So that’s fun. I um four is good cuz I feel like there’s still a possibility for like a really good one and two. You know what I mean? They’re coming. They are.
The next drill is numbers game, which this is a really hard drill. Um it’s five people on each team, but you run in each possession. So, if you start out, you’re running for a good seven minutes straight. Um, so we’ll we’ll get their analysis on this drill. Okay. Yeah. My take on this, I’m going to give it I’ll give it an eight because I know I feel like I just know another drill that’s coming that could be worse.
I’m going to say you know what? Actually, I’m going to say nine. Okay. I was going to say nine. I was going to say nine, too. So, this is good that we’ve we’re on the same page.
Number I can’t really think of anything worse than that right now. No, I can. Wow. one or two drills. But yeah. Yeah.
The next one, also probably not a fan favorite, is high layups, where you have what, to shoot four layups, the ball can’t touch the ground, and if you don’t get it in or you miss a layup, you have to go again and again and again and again and you just keep getting more tired. Okay. Okay. This can go two ways because it can either be really good or really bad. I agree. And the more you do it, the worse it gets because you’re just tired. But I’m going to assume it’s the worst.
So in this situation, no, we always want to assume the best. Assume best intent. And best intent. I’m going to say, wait, do I have something for nine right now? Yeah, we say nine. I’ll say eight.
Okay. I think I agree. If you get a first try, it’s so exhilarating. You’re like, you’re so hyped. So hype.
But when you it gets to three or four or five, you’re like, whoa. Six. Wo. Um, okay. I’m going to say seven.
So, I’m going to leave eight open. Okay. I like the way you’re thinking. The next one is Olympic shooting, which is a warm-up drill, and it’s three minutes or five for mid-range. I think it’s five for mid-range, three for threes.
Okay. Uh, I think this will be high on their list. I like Olympics. I like Olympic. You got a good run in. You know, you’re not dying.
It’s a good warm-up drill cuz we like move a lot. I’ll say I’ll say five. I’ll agree with five cuz if you don’t get it the first time and you have to run sprints for it. Yeah. And then you have to go into threes. That kind of sucks.
Yeah. I think our team generally enjoys Olympic though. Yeah. I’m never never The next drill, another warm-up drill. Lions shooting. It’s a minute from like five different spots and you’re just running back and forth from sideline to sideline. You do layups first, then you do like floaters, then mid-range, then threes. Uh I don’t know where you guys will land with this one.
What’s our ranking right now? One, two. I don’t know. Okay. I’m See, I’m not really opposed to any of these drills besides numbers. Um maybe I should have put that a 10.
What was the drill again? Lions. Lions. Yep, you got it. Um, five, six.
I honestly think it’s I think lines is kind of easy. Okay. But I don’t enjoy it though. So that’s the thing. I’m going to give it sounds like six. Okay.
I don’t Yeah, it’s not my favorite, but it’s I don’t open. I’m I’ll put it at six as well. Honestly, I wish I would have put warm up higher right now because warm up shooting. We I like it though. We just do it a lot. So I’m like, you know what I mean?
There’s some good ones coming up that I think you guys will put above above warm-up, but for now, we’ll go 135. Uh, which is a drill where you have to get one perfect attempt down the court and then after everyone goes, you do three, but you have to switch between weaving and like the pass, the outlet pass and the full. Yeah. Is this five on? No, I don’t. Have they not done it?
I don’t think so. Okay, we’ll just make Ashley’s the same as Macy’s. I have done this. Okay, so she’s done it, but she doesn’t pay attention. Just kidding. I’m kidding. Gotcha.
It’s not very fun. If you And if you don’t get it or the ball drops, you have to go again. And if you’re on five or if you miss a layup, you got to go again. I don’t think I will say we did this more my sophomore year, maybe. Is that maybe that’s why you haven’t done it?
I’m newer. Yeah, Ash’s newer. But I don’t know. Some years we do more like we’re more drill heavy or like for one specific thing. Like 135 we did a lot. What?
Sophomore year. Luh high was a lot last year. So it just depends. I’ll go seven. Yeah, that’s good. Yeah, I’ll go seven.
I don’t I’ve never done it. So we’ll give you eight. She’ll go eight. She’ll go eight. I think you Okay. Maybe you haven’t.
I don’t think I have cuz I have no idea what’s going on. Next drill is UConn shooting. This can be good, can be bad. I don’t know. We’ll see. It’s just basically a shooting drill to warm up and but if you don’t get the goal, you have to run the difference. So, I love UConn shooting.
I would like kill to do that right now. I think it’s so I love UConn. I hear UConn. It’s going to be a good day. And it’s like an energy booster. Like when you get the score and everyone’s just knocking down threes, it’s so exhilarating and it’s like That second the ball flies out of bounds though and you just know you’re not getting to it, it’s like Yeah.
Oh, your score resets if the ball drops and you have to get a rebound and put it back in the hoop if you miss. So that that makes it harder. But it’s fun. Yeah, I think it’s I’ll say two. I’m really holding the one spot open. Good night.
All right. I don’t know if you’ve done this drill. I don’t know if she pulled it out last year. Coach has gotten a little bit nicer. Uh, but we have UCLA slides doc which is of hell. We didn’t do .
It’s terrible. Uh, you go zigzags. You do cross between behind spin and then after your zigzags between each one ball above your head slides and if it’s not above your head, she resets and you got to sprint everywhere. So of that. Okay. I’m hot take but I don’t I don’t know it’s that it is hard but I don’t I don’t real one time my freshman year I think my freshman year we did the real one but we did get some breaks 10 but that was the worst 10 definitely they’re awful you did not have the hard one being a big person and having to slide is like yeah no that’s fair I’m I’ll say I I mean, what do I have?
10 and one. Yeah. I’m too big to slide for that long. I believe in you. The last one. Macy, you have the one open and Ashley, you have the two.
So, you got to live with it. But I think Macy’s is going to really like this one. This is case shooting. End of practice drill. When she says case, practice is over after it. So, it is blessing.
Blessing. It’s like, let’s go. We are all hype. So, do you agree with your one? Absolutely. If I could do it over again, I would do it.
Case has won. Man, I It’s just so fun. Like, I don’t know. The vibes are always high during case. The energy is there and I love shooting threes, honestly. So, I love shooting threes.
I’m fine with my two. I don’t shoot the threes during case. Yeah, if you don’t shoot the threes and I get why, so I just kind of pass. But, I mean, it’s definitely an easy drill. It’s nice to know practice is over. It’s great to hype up your teammates.
So, I’m good with two. Yeah. All right. That’s all we have for the current Michigan basketball players, Ashley and Macy. Thank you for joining the podcast. It’s good to be back in Ann Arbor.
Yes. Love you guys. Thank you. Y All right, let’s go. But first, an OLIPOP toast. Cheers.

Yeah, it’s the Michigan Network. Hey, Ben. All right, you got to answer quickly, but we’ll go this way. Okay, we’re doing overrated or underrated. Oh, right.
All right. Crisler women’s basketball games. Underrated. Underrated. Underrated. Rivalry games. Underrated.
Underrated. Underrated. Um, bus rides with the team. Overrated. No, no, no, no. Underrated. Underrated.
Underrated. So underrated. I love the bus rides. Even though the planes are like so efficient. I think our bus rides this year were really fun.
Yeah, our bus rides were awesome. We were talking the entire time. The entire time. Um, our bus ride. Game-day shootaround.
This gets overrated. Overrated. You know, and I like to say I love acting. Not my time right before a game, honestly. This I don’t I don’t love them. I don’t love them. Santa was the best. Yeah.
Yeah. I’m just not an actress, but overrated. For sure. Playing in close games.
Underrated. Underrated. Underrated. Yeah.
I don’t love them. They give my They give me anxiety. Yeah, that’s fair. But they are fun when you look back and you win.
But You must win. Conditioning overrated. See, it gets you in shape, but nothing’s going to get you more in shape than playing basketball, but at the same time, it’s like conditioning helps you with your mental. And Jamie’s the goat. So, you know, shout out Jamie. Jamie.
Yeah. Maybe underrated. Yeah. Now that I’m out of basketball, I kind of miss like being, you know, feeling like Ally wanted to go to the Friday morning workout this morning at and I said, “No, no. It’s the best feeling when you get out of those workouts. It is.
This might touch a nerve even for me. Freshman year as a whole. Under underrated. Really?
No. No. Wait. Sorry. Sorry. I got overrated. Overrated. You’re busy the whole time.
Yeah. I like my freshman year. I say underrated, but she also didn’t go here. That’s why.
I’m not kidding. My first year. Okay. Matching travel outfits. Oh my god. overrated.
I kind of like I don’t really mind that we look clean when we travel. That’s a good point.
You do look clean, but it’s at the same time everyone has to have stuff ready. I mean, like coming in our uniforms like no matching on the plane. Travel fits. Yeah, that’s fine. But like going to dinner, look at doing team bonding stuff. Overrated.
You do look clean, but at the same time, it’s like you got to make sure you know Michelle washed her stuff the night before. And it’s just like that’s not happening. Yeah. I would say it’s good for like one day trips, but once it gets to like the five-day trips Yeah. like I’m putting it on like five times, I’m like, “Holy cow, this needs to be washed.” Yeah, I agree.
Yeah. Last one. March Madness. Oh, underrated. Underrated. Yeah, totally underrated.
It’s gotten better. women’s game is growing, so that’s fun, but still a bit underrated, I would say. Yeah. Well, thank you guys for joining the podcast, my besties.
