August 1, 2026
Episode Description
In this episode, JJ Grant joins host, former teammate and Hail Media co-founder Doug Cohen to share his journey from Portsmouth, OH to Liverpool, NY to Michigan. JJ discusses his high school and college football (and track) experiences, overcoming plenty of adversity in the form of multiple injuries, and insights into Michigan's football culture and legacy.
Despite multiple injuries including a torn pectoral muscle and torn knee ligaments JJ was able to overcome them to become a Co-Captain of The 1989 Big Ten Champion Michigan Wolverines - Bo Schembechler's last team. He was honored as 2nd team all-Big Ten and ranks 18th on the all time tackles list at Michigan, as well as 4th all time in pass breakups by linebackers. JJ was quick to point out that "that's why he played defense because some of those pass breakups should have been interceptions!" Lol!
Plenty of thoughtful insights here as well as some pretty hilarious stuff such as the legend of Mudcat Grant (yes - the baseball player), and JJ's world record-breaking neck roll. We discuss JJ's low point vs. MSU in 1987 and the complete redemption with a legendary (and underrated in the annals of great individual Michigan Football performances) day against MSU in 1989, beating Ohio State, going to Rose Bowls, life after football and much, much more. Great player, great teammate, great Michigan Man.
